Reach Hermes by forging the Aurifer Knife and killing at least one Relicta ghost en route to Séptimo Arte (the Bad ending branch). Phase 1 is a fast chase; Phase 2 exposes Hermes's mouth — walking into that mouth is the Devoured missable.

Overview

Hermes is the Bad ending final boss of Tenebris Somnia. You reach him by completing the Aurifer Knife chain and killing at least one Relicta ghost with the Aurifer along the post-Aurifer sprint. His two-phase pattern, the Relicta kill branch, and the Devoured missable hook all live on this page; the four-ending overview is on endings and the Aurifer forge chain is on knife weapon.

Branch prerequisite — kill at least one Relicta

Hermes only appears if you take the Bad ending branch. Concretely:

  1. Reach the Desiderium dream layer and run the Lapis Fictus → Melanosis → Virdis → Aurifer forge chain — see knife weapon.
  2. After the Aurifer cutscene, kill at least one Relicta ghost with the Aurifer. Killing zero Relictas flips the branch to the Good ending and you will instead face Lacuna — see Lacuna fight.
  3. Sprint through the same Hotel-doors-to-Séptimo-Arte route; only the Relicta behavior on each floor changes.
  4. To also unlock the Heart of Lead achievement (Hidden on Steam) in the same run, kill Relictas on every floor along the route, not just the ones directly on the path. Avoid multikills and wait for the gold particles to clear between swings so the kill counter registers every kill.

The Aurifer is the only weapon that reliably hits Relicta ghosts. Without the Aurifer Knife, even a perfect path will not stay on the Bad ending branch.

Phase 1 — chase-and-punish

Hermes Phase 1 is faster than Lacuna. He closes distance by lunging and telegraphing a one-second wind-up before each chase swing. The clean loop:

  1. Sprint backwards or sideways to keep camera space — Hermes is faster than you at neutral pace.
  2. Dodge on the wind-up cue, not the swing cue. The wind-up is the one-second pause where Hermes's shoulder pulls back.
  3. Punish once per lunge during the recovery animation. Two swings make him stagger, three lock the next attack.
  4. Avoid back-corners — the arena floor has two safe wheel-routes; backs to either corner clip into camera.
  5. Phase 1 ends when Hermes roars and briefly leaves the arena floor.

Multikill setups during Phase 1 count toward the Two Stooges achievement (visible on Steam, 46.6% global), but Carnitos kills do not count.

Phase 1 → Phase 2 transition

After the roar, Hermes leaves the floor for a brief cutscene then returns with a new pattern: a wider telegraph wind-up followed by an exposed-mouth attack. The phase change lasts about 5–8 seconds of cutscene; do not swing during it — the cutscene is i-frames.

When Phase 2 begins:

  1. Watch the exposed-mouth wind-up — Hermes raises his head and opens his mouth for a beat before the bite.
  2. Sidestep the bite at full sprint, then punish once during the recovery.
  3. Repeat the dodge-then-punish loop until his health bar empties.

The exposed-mouth bite is also the Devoured missable trigger — see below. Plan around it deliberately.

Devoured — the Phase 2 mouth missable (Hidden on Steam)

The Devoured achievement pops when Hermes's exposed-mouth bite kills you in Phase 2. It is the mirror of Acrophobia on the Good branch: a die-missable that requires you to deliberately walk into the attack.

Setup:

  1. Reach Phase 2 along the Bad branch (Hermes already on screen with the mouth attack).
  2. On the next exposed-mouth wind-up, stop moving and let Hermes reach you. Do not dodge.
  3. The bite lands and the kill cutscene plays; Devoured registers. The cutscene rolls into MAGNUM OPUS.

Devoured is Hidden on Steam until unlock — there is no public percentage. It is the rarest Bad-branch missable and shares a slot with Heart of Lead: Heart of Lead counts Relictas on the route, while Devoured requires you to keep your last Relictas scattered on each floor (don't kill the final Relicta en route if you want Heart of Lead too). Plan Devoured in a run where MAGNUM OPUS is the only goal.

If you want MAGNUM OPUS without Devoured, keep sidestepping the mouth attack. Reload from before the Séptimo Arte entry to retry.

What success looks like

  • Survive Phase 2 cleanly → credits roll → MAGNUM OPUS achievement pops (visible on Steam, ~12.2% global).
  • Die to Hermes's exposed-mouth bite in Phase 2 → Devoured + MAGNUM OPUS both pop in the same ending cutscene.

Plan Devoured in a dedicated Bad-branch run separate from your Heart of Lead run. Relicta kill targets conflict: Heart of Lead wants every-Relicta kills on every floor, Devoured wants you alive at the Hermes mouth — both routes reach MAGNUM OPUS, so you only need MAGNUM OPUS once for the achievement.
