Overview
Tenebris Somnia's combat rewards weapon-aware decisions, environmental tricks, and boss-specific patterns more than raw twitch aim. The same principles apply from Iván's 3rd-floor apartment through the Desiderium dream layer and the Séptimo Arte finale.
1. Match your held weapon to the enemy
Holding the wrong thing can kill you faster than the enemy. The two most punishing cases:
- Fumus's red circles — holding a loaded firearm and stepping into one triggers instant death; holding a melee weapon causes self-harm; holding an unloaded weapon triggers a long animation that drains you. The safest move is to unequip everything, run straight into the circles to make them vanish, then punish Fumus during the stagger.
- Relicta ghosts after the Aurifer Knife — only the Aurifer Knife can kill them. Sprint past them for the Good Ending or cut them down on every floor for the Bad Ending (Heart of Lead).
The full equipment-awareness rules: see Fumus fight guide for the red-circle logic and endings for the Aurifer Knife route choice.
2. Use the environment before trading hits
Almost every boss arena gives you an environmental kill. Prefer it on every attempt.
- Studio lights in Sulfur arenas shatter for an instant kill of every enemy on screen. Kite the Sulfur and minions in front of a still-lit fixture, then break it.
- Mannequins in Sanguis's beast-form arena absorb boss damage. Lure Sanguis into the mannequins until he breaks them — this is also the Bad Puppy achievement.
- The giant knife planted in the chase arena instantly kills Sanguis's beast form if he lands on it. See Sanguis beast form fight.
- Candles in the Obscuratus arena reveal the otherwise invisible boss. Light them all to force him visible, deal damage, repeat. See Obscuratus fight.
- Bottom-right corner of the Carnitos arena is a melee blind spot. Stand there and punish only between whiffs — this is also the Butcheress achievement. See Carnitos fight.
3. Break grapples fast
- Vitria's tentacle grab is fatal if you hold still. Mash the interact button to break free; a follow-up attack usually staggers her long enough to retaliate. See Vitria fight.
- Relicta ghost latches during the post-Aurifer sprint drain life continuously. Keep sprinting rather than swinging — motion shakes them off, melee just feeds them.
4. Handle Vorax in two steps
Vorax overcharge and self-destruct when they're left alone. The safe pattern:
- Damage a Vorax until it visibly turns red.
- Flee to another room before the timer expires.
The explosion will detonate alone and you earn "He Just Wanted a Hug". Finishing a red Vorax in the same room is what causes the explosion damage. See Vorax fight.
5. Stack enemies only where it's safe
For "The Two Stooges" (2+ enemies at once, not Carnitos), narrow hallways near elevators are the safest place to let enemies bunch up. Each platform layout has at least one such choke; if you can't find one, see combat encounters by floor.
6. Plan for ending choice on the same save
The Aurifer Knife save is the branch point for SOLVE ET COAGULA (Good, Lacuna) versus MAGNUM OPUS (Bad, Hermes) plus Heart of Lead.
- Don't kill Relicta ghosts → Good ending.
- Kill Relicta ghosts on every floor (not just the path to Séptimo Arte), avoid multikills, wait for the gold particles to clear between kills → Bad ending and the Heart of Lead count.
Reload the same save to switch routes; saves can be branched from the Aurifer onward to keep both endings open. See endings.
7. Decide which missable achievements to attempt
Some combat achievements invalidate others. You cannot get both Wrench Queen and Exhaust Pipe; Iron and wax (Wrench-only Obscuratus) rules out switching weapons for that fight; Exhaust Pipe (Pipe-only Fumus) rules out the Wrench Queen run; Acrophobia and Devoured require deliberately dying during the Good / Bad ending boss fights.
A single run cannot earn 100%. Plan Wrench Queen, Exhaust Pipe, Iron and wax, Butcheress, Valiant Little Taylor, Acrophobia, and Devoured across separate runs and use the post-Aurifer save to branch endings. The full checklist is on the achievements page.
